The experiences of and needs on public library services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disability and/or autism in the view of their parents

|
The purpose of this study was to explore how public library services for people with intellectual and developmental disability (IDD) and/or autism are promoted in the view of their parents. A total of 153 parents of individuals with IDD and/or autism participated. The parents were asked about their previous experiences in public libraries and their needs for facilitating their children’s use of public libraries. The findings were as follows: Approximately half of the parents responded had used public libraries with their children. Mostly they checked out books and hardly knew much of library services designed for the individuals with IDD and/or autism. The parents strongly urged a necessity for various programs reflecting the library needs of the individuals with IDD and/or autism over a life span. Based on the results of this study, the future directions for facilitating public library services for individuals with IDD and/or autism were discussed.
